    Hybrid optical and magnetic manipulation of microrobots

    Microrobotic systems have the potential to provide precise manipulation on cellular level for diagnostics, drug delivery and surgical interventions. These systems vary from tethered to untethered microrobots with sizes below a micrometer to a few microns. However, their main disadvantage is that they do not have the same capabilities in terms of degrees-of-freedom, sensing and control as macroscale robotic systems. In particular, their lack of on-board sensing for pose or force feedback, their control methods and interface for automated or manual user control are limited as well as their geometry has few degrees-of-freedom making three-dimensional manipulation more challenging. This PhD project is on the development of a micromanipulation framework that can be used for single cell analysis using the Optical Tweezers as well as a combination of optical trapping and magnetic actuation for recon gurable microassembly. The focus is on untethered microrobots with sizes up to a few tens of microns that can be used in enclosed environments for ex vivo and in vitro medical applications. The work presented investigates the following aspects of microrobots for single cell analysis: i) The microfabrication procedure and design considerations that are taken into account in order to fabricate components for three-dimensional micromanipulation and microassembly, ii) vision-based methods to provide 6-degree-offreedom position and orientation feedback which is essential for closed-loop control, iii) manual and shared control manipulation methodologies that take into account the user input for multiple microrobot or three-dimensional microstructure manipulation and iv) a methodology for recon gurable microassembly combining the Optical Tweezers with magnetic actuation into a hybrid method of actuation for microassembly.Open Acces

    Assessing the silent epidemic of malnutrition in Palestinian preschool children

    AbstractBackgroundThe nutritional status of children living under conflict is an important issue. The aim of the present study is to review all available data on malnutrition in preschool Palestinian children and provide objective results concerning the epidemic of malnutrition.MethodsThe literature for all research on the prevalence of malnutrition on Palestinian children with data collected during the period 1998–2007 was reviewed. Der Simonian-Laird Random effects model for meta-analysis was applied and cumulative analyses were performed to determine time-trends for each outcome measure (iron deficiency anemia [IDA], wasting, underweight and stunting).FindingsThe results showed that 39.5% of the children suffered from IDA, 2.9% from wasting, 4.7% were underweight and 10.9% stunted. The cumulative analyses showed a peak in the prevalence of IDA during 1999, followed by an irregular decrease afterward. The proportion of wasted and underweight children peaked during 2002 and 2004, respectively, both showing a gradual decline afterward. Chronic malnutrition appears to be almost similar during the decade 1998–2007, by demonstrating small, irregular oscillations.ConclusionsAlthough the prevalence of malnutrition among Palestinian preschool children has been improved during the studied period, it still remains high. Additionally, the results show that interventions/aid have acute effects on the health of children.FundingNone

    Data-centric multi-task surgical phase estimation with sparse scene segmentation

    PURPOSE: Surgical workflow estimation techniques aim to divide a surgical video into temporal segments based on predefined surgical actions or objectives, which can be of different granularity such as steps or phases. Potential applications range from real-time intra-operative feedback to automatic post-operative reports and analysis. A common approach in the literature for performing automatic surgical phase estimation is to decouple the problem into two stages: feature extraction from a single frame and temporal feature fusion. This approach is performed in two stages due to computational restrictions when processing large spatio-temporal sequences. METHODS: The majority of existing works focus on pushing the performance solely through temporal model development. Differently, we follow a data-centric approach and propose a training pipeline that enables models to maximise the usage of existing datasets, which are generally used in isolation. Specifically, we use dense phase annotations available in Cholec80, and sparse scene (i.e., instrument and anatomy) segmentation annotation available in CholecSeg8k in less than 5% of the overlapping frames. We propose a simple multi-task encoder that effectively fuses both streams, when available, based on their importance and jointly optimise them for performing accurate phase prediction. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: We show that with a small fraction of scene segmentation annotations, a relatively simple model can obtain comparable results than previous state-of-the-art and more complex architectures when evaluated in similar settings. We hope that this data-centric approach can encourage new research directions where data, and how to use it, plays an important role along with model development

    Oral Adjuvant Curcumin Therapy for Attaining Clinical Remission in Ulcerative Colitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

    Curcumin has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties and has been investigated as an adjuvant therapy of ulcerative colitis (UC). The scope of this study was to systematically review and meta-analyze the efficacy of oral curcumin administration as an adjuvant therapy of UC. MEDLINE, Cochrane/CENTRAL, ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO-ICT Registry, EMBASE and grey literature were searched for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The primary outcome was clinical remission (attainment) and the secondary outcome was clinical response (maintenance/failure). Risk of bias was assessed with the Cochrane tool. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated with a Mantel-Haenszel (M-H) random effects model and with a beta-binomial (B-B) random effects model when zero events/cells occurred. Four RCTs met the criteria, but one was removed from the analyses due to inconsistency in protocol details. With the M-H method, treatment with curcumin was significantly superior to placebo in attaining remission in the per-protocol (PP) analysis (OR = 5.83, 95%CI = 1.24–27.43), but not in the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis (OR = 4.33, 95%CI = 0.78–24.00). However, with the more accurate B-B method, both analyses were insignificant (for PP OR = 4.26, 95%CI = 0.59–31.00, for ITT OR = 3.80, 95%CI = 0.55–26.28). Based on the current available evidence, oral curcumin administration does not seem superior to placebo in attaining remission in patients with UC. Future RCTs should be planned more cautiously with sufficient size and adhere to the ITT analysis in all outcomes

    Dietary management of celiac disease: revisiting the guidelines

    Objective: Medical nutrition therapy (MNT), by lifelong compliance to a gluten free diet, is the only treatment of celiac disease (CD). Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) regarding the management of CD emphasize on the role of MNT besides other treatment options. The aim of the present study was to review and critically appraise CD-specific MNT CPGs, and identify the areas in need of improvement for better adherence a¬¬nd outcomes. Research Methods & Procedures: A comprehensive search was performed at Pubmed, Guidelines International Network (GIN), Google Scholar and related websites for CPGs on the dietary management of CD, published in the English language. Results: A total of 12 CPGs were retrieved and critically appraised by three independent reviewers utilizing the AGREE II instrument. All CPGs were of low quality based on AGREE II tool. Among the 12 CPGs, the NICE ones achieved the highest score and was unanimously recommended without modifications by the three reviews, while AGA, AHS, BSPGHAN, CREST and FISPGHAN CPGs received the lowest score. Conclusions: The present study unveils the low quality of guidelines regarding the MNT of CD patients, indicating the need of updated and improved guidelines taking into consideration the proposed items of the AGREE II.     Insulin receptor (IR) expression in human trophoblasts of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL)

    Purpose: Insulin and glucose pathways play a key role to fetal viability and growth. The focus of the study is to investigate the potential differences of immunohistochemical expression of IR in trophoblastic and decidual cells between women who had recurrent pregnancy loss and women that underwent an abortion. Materials and methods: Trophoblastic and decidual tissues from fifty (50) women with elective abortion used as control group and from fifty (50) women with recurrent miscarriages were collected during gestational weeks 6 to 12. IR antibodies were used as immunohistochemical staining markers. Nuclear and cytoplasmic expression was evaluated. Results: No IR immunohistochemical expression was detected in both trophoblastic cells of the implantation site and deciduas basalis of the two study groups. Conclusion: The effort made to enhance our knowledge on the physiology and histology of IR expression in connection with pregnancy was halted because the results were inconclusive. While studying, though, the correlation of recurrent miscarriage with IR expression, it became evident that a lot of hormones and pathways form the weave of gestational pathology and its delicate harmony.     Effects of Long-Versus Short-Term Exposure to the Mediterranean Diet on Skin Microvascular Function and Quality of Life of Healthy Adults in Greece and the UK

    The beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence in reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and improving CVD-related physiological indices have been well-documented. However, the exact MD adherence duration needed for these effects to occur is under-researched. The aim of the present, two-arm, two-site study clinical trial was to assess the effects of long- vs. short-term MD adherence on the skin microvascular circulation, and quality of life. Two groups were recruited, one being long-term MD adherers (>5 years; from Greece; control group), and one of the non-adherers (from the UK), with the latter participating in a four-week MD intervention (intervention group). Our main outcome was skin microvascular function assessed by cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC). Secondary outcomes included quality of life, dietary intake, blood pressure and lipidemic profile. At the end of the intervention, both groups had high MD adherence. For the intervention group, significantly improved post-intervention CVC values were noted concerning the initial peak phase (2.0 ± 0.6 vs. 2.8 ± 0.8; p 0.05). CVC values of the control group, were however higher at the plateau phase in comparison to the intervention group (intervention end; 3.8 ± 0.8 vs. 3.1 ± 1.2; p 0.05). As per QoL, the physical domain was improved post-intervention (13.7 ± 1.2 vs. 15.9 ± 1.2; p 0.05). No differences were observed in the lipidemic profile between groups, or between the baseline and final intervention phases. The findings indicate that although short-term MD adherence is effective in improving certain microvascular physiological properties and QoL domains, there is room for additional improvement, observed in long-term adherers. Our findings are important in the design of future, MD-based, lifestyle interventions, with the advisable durations differing between target groups

    Increased apoptotic activity on inflammatory human placentas in spontaneous abortions during the first and second trimester of gestation: a histochemical and immunohistochemical study

    The aim of this study was to investigate the role of apoptotic markers on inflammatory human placentas from spontaneous abortions during the first and second trimester of gestation and compare them to those without inflammation. Paraffin-embedded specimens from 76 placentas were investigated by conventional histology and immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies against M30, Caspase 3, Caspase 8 and Caspase 9, as well as the terminal deoxynucleotidyl tranferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end labeling method. A higher prevalence of expression of apoptotic markers (94.4%) was observed in placentas associated with chorioamnionitis in comparison with those without inflammation. Our observations confirm that apoptosis is strikingly prevalent in placentas diagnosed with histologic chorioamnionitis, while the inflammation induces cell death

    Adherence to dietary recommendations, nutrient intake adequacy and diet quality among pediatric cystic fibrosis patients: results from the greecf study

    Nutrition is an important component of cystic fibrosis (CF) therapy, with a high-fat diet being the cornerstone of treatment. However, adherence to the dietary recommendations for CF appears suboptimal and burdensome for most children and adolescents with CF, leading to malnutrition, inadequate growth, compromised lung function and increased risk for respiratory infections. A cross-sectional approach was deployed to examine the degree of adherence to the nutrition recommendations and diet quality among children with CF. A total of 76 children were recruited from Aghia Sophia’s Children Hospital, in Athens, Greece. In their majority, participants attained their ideal body weight, met the recommendations for energy and fat intake, exceeding the goal for saturated fatty acids consumption. Carbohydrate and fiber intake were suboptimal and most participants exhibited low or mediocre adherence to the Mediterranean diet prototype. It appears that despite the optimal adherence to the energy and fat recommendations, there is still room for improvement concerning diet quality and fiber intake.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
